States That were
UNION, CONFEDERATE, and NON-STATES

Divided States

In April 1861, the Southern States began ceceding from the Union. The First "shots" were fired at Fort Sumpter, South Carolina, and the CSA Capitol was established at Richmond, VA. As a result of the Civil War, Virginia went to the South, and Most West Virginians were North Sympathizers. Thus the split between Virginia, and West Virginia, formed two States. Unfortuantely, I had relatives living in both States, and so in the Annals of Civil War History, one can find Metheny, Matheny names serving on both sides. Same goes for Matheny's in Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky and Tennessee. My direct line was Illinois, so in Illinois History, Matheny's, and Metheny's were mustered into the Illinois 20th Infantry, 38th Infantry, 40th Infantry, 63rd Infantry, 78th Infantry, and 130th Infantry.
